What is Paraquat? The Paraquat Definition.

Paraquat dichloride, commonly referred to as “Paraquat,” is a highly toxic herbicide. It is so toxic that, according to the EPA, one small sip can kill a person. It is banned in over 30 countries including the European Union and China. Evidence suggests that chronic exposure to paraquat may increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease by 200% to 600%.

Paraquat dichloride is sold under several names. Paraquat trade names include Gramoxone herbicide, Firestorm, Ortho-Paraquat, Helmquat 3SL, Para-SHOT, Parazone 3SL, and Quik-Quat. It is primarily used as a liquid spray.

What Is Paraquat Used For?

Paraquat herbicide has been used on crops in the United States since the 1960s as a gramoxone weed killer. It is used to control weeds and invasive grasses. Paraquat is most commonly used on corn, cotton, soybeans, and vineyard grapes, but is used on more than 100 different crops in the United States.

Because of its extreme toxicity, those certified to mix, load, and apply the weed killer are the most at risk, but other workers or bystanders that may have been exposed may also have developed health problems caused by that exposure to Paraquat, also known as” Paraquat poisoning.” If this sounds like you call us at (888) 835-6565.

Paraquat and Parkinson’s

Studies have shown an association between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and exposure to the Paraquat herbicide. According to the Unified Parkinson’s Advocacy Council (UPAC), a group of state, regional and national PD organizations, "scientific research indicates low-level chronic exposure [to Paraquat] significantly increases the risk of Parkinson’s disease". The UPAC has called on the EPA to ban Paraquat.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Over time, the disease impairs movement and motor skills. Eventually non-motor skills are affected also. It has recently been in the news following UCLA research on pesticides in San Joaquin Valley, now nicknamed “Parkinson’s Alley.”

The common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include (but are not limited to):

  • Loss of balance
  • Hand tremors
  • Difficulty moving or walking
  • Stiffness
  • Bradykinesia (slowness in voluntary reflexes and movement)
  • Trouble speaking
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Insomnia and other sleep disorders
  • Incontinence
  • Dementia
  • Delusions
