What is Enbrel?
Enbrel (etanercept) is a biologic response modifier manufactured by Immunex.
Who takes it, and for what condition?
Enbrel is used to treat adults and children suffering from lifelong inflammatory diseases, such as moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, moderate to severe juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
How does Enbrel work?
Enbrel blocks proteins and suppresses the immune system.
Because the immune system is suppressed, patients are at a greater risk for getting serious blood infections and nervous system disorders. Studies have linked Enbrel to multiple sclerosis, lymphoma, tuberculosis, lupus, and bacterial sepsis.
